Thanks Marty. Today we're going to hear an Arkansas bluesman sing a song he wrote about his life in music.
It was October 8, 2013, when I met Mike Doyle in the parking lot at ASU to make our monthly sojourn down to Newport, Arkansas, for KASU Bluesday Tuesday. Mike was the KASU station manager at the time and he would MC the show. I was going to record Billy Jones Bluez for Something Blue.
Arkansas Roots was just a gleam in our eyes. Marty Scarbrough was promoting the idea and Mike and I would talk about just how cool the show could be.
Little did I know that I would host a weekly musicology podcast on Arkansas Roots and that I would be playing a song I recorded that night.
Billy Jones is a bandleader, a hot guitarist, an expressive singer, a creative songwriter, and most of all, an entertainer. After all, it is show business. You're supposed to put on a show. They certainly did that.
Playing with Billy that night were his right hand man, Corey Bray on organ, Ricco Smith on drums, and Honeycut on bass. All fine outstanding Arkansas musicians.
Billy plays everything, blues, country, gospel, funk, and rock. I selected one of his originals to play today, the title track of his album "I'm A Bluesman".
My son Carl and I were both vlogging at the time and he recommended a little Canon still camera that also took good videos. I had it with me so I talked to Billy about video recording one of his originals and he was down with it. That's how I also made a video of this song.
